Dean never realised before that ‘watching over’ was so literal; that ‘celestial body’ meant the very thing Jimmy had been carrying around for the past few years, and when the angels fell to earth, the stars winked out, one by one.
He’s used to the empty skies, by now; and he’s fine.
It’s been six years since the angels Fell; since closing the gates, since Sam quit the game and settled down, since Dean started hunting alone, again (turns out there’s still plenty to find, even without Hell making a contribution; who knew?)
And he’s fine; he is. He gets by, he visits his brother, he talks to people, along the way. Doesn’t make it as easily with the ladies since he’s getting on a little, now, but he does well enough on a smile, and waking up alone doesn’t hurt as much as it used to. The bunker is still home to him, and its big halls echo, but most often it’s with music, not with silence; not with footsteps.
He finds himself outside a bar on some back road, halfway to a hunt.
